Do you get it?

The message is only as effective as the audience’s perception of it.

All too often, the communicator forgets about the communicatee.  We’re so busy saying what we want to say that we forget to check if anyone is listening.  In this era of television, and with the advent of the DVR, the biggest hurdle of getting the message across is making the message as good – or better – than the program in which it appears.  It is not enough to tell the world how good you are – you have to convince them to listen first, then appeal to them in a way they’ll appreciate.  Don’t insult.  Treat them like adults.  Include them in the message.  Make them feel like they want to know you, or better, like they already do know you.

Michael Brueggemeyer works backward.  His process is to figure out the audience, understand what makes them tick, what drives their decision-making.  He learns how to appeal to them, and what is important to them.  Then, and only then, can a method be devised to effectively deliver a message.  If you have a script, but haven’t thought about the audience, then you’ve written a script based on what you want to say and not on what your audience wants to hear.  The result is a lot of money spent on making you feel good about your creation, when it should be about your customers bringing more money to you.  With Michael Brueggemeyer, your audience will appreciate the difference, and you’ll appreciate the added income.
